This Black Forest Trifle for Christmas is a festive and delicious layered dessert that combines moist chocolate cake, creamy vanilla pudding, luscious marinated cherries, and fluffy whipped cream. Finished with dark chocolate shavings, this no-bake trifle is perfect for holiday gatherings and easy to prepare ahead of time.

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix (or 1 homemade chocolate cake)

Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cherries

  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries (pitted, with juice or syrup)
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice (from the canned cherries or fresh)

Other

  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings (or grated chocolate)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Bake the chocolate cake according to package or recipe instructions and allow it to cool completely. Then cut the cake into 1-inch bite-sized cubes for layering.
  2. Whip the Cream: In a large bowl, beat the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract using a mixer until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Cherries: Drain canned cherries, reserving the juice, or pit and chop fresh cherries. Mix cherries with their juice or syrup to marinate.
  4. Assemble the Trifle: In a trifle dish, layer chocolate cake cubes evenly at the bottom, then spread a layer of vanilla pudding over the cake. Spoon marinated cherries and some juice on top, then add a generous layer of whipped cream. Repeat these layers until the dish is filled, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  5. Top with Chocolate and Cherries: Garnish the final whipped cream layer with dark chocolate shavings and a few cherries for decoration. Optionally dust with cocoa powder.
  6. Let it Chill: Refrigerate the assembled trifle for at least 3 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the layers to set before serving.

Notes

  • You can use store-bought brownies or sponge cake instead of baking a cake to save time.
  • Marinating the cherries with their juice enhances the flavor and moisture in the trifle.
  • The dessert can be prepared a day in advance and kept refrigerated for convenience.
  • Adjust the sweetness of the whipped cream by varying the amount of powdered sugar.
  • The cocoa powder garnish is optional but adds a nice touch of chocolate bitterness to balance the sweetness.
