Delicious homemade pizza rolls featuring a soft, flavorful dough filled with classic pizza sauce, melted mozzarella cheese, and optional pepperoni or sautéed vegetables. These bite-sized snacks are perfect for parties, quick lunches, or anytime you crave pizza in a portable form. They can be baked or air fried to golden perfection and served with your favorite dipping sauces.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped pepperoni (optional)
  • Optional: sautéed vegetables (bell peppers, onions, mushrooms)

For the Crust:

  • 1 egg (for egg wash) or 2 tbsp melted butter (optional for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active. Then, in a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, salt, olive oil, and the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes by hand or 5-7 minutes with a mixer. Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release trapped air. On a floured surface, roll the dough out evenly to about 1/8-inch thickness, creating a large rectangle.
  3. Cut and Fill: Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut the dough into approximately 3-inch squares. On each square, spread a spoonful of pizza sauce, sprinkle mozzarella cheese, and add pepperoni or sautéed vegetables as desired. Be careful not to overfill to prevent spilling during rolling.
  4. Roll and Seal: Carefully fold each dough square into a roll shape, ensuring the edges meet and pinch them tightly to seal completely. This prevents the filling from leaking out during cooking.
  5. Bake or Air Fry: Place the rolls seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet for baking or directly into the air fryer basket. Brush the tops with egg wash or melted butter to get a golden, glossy crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15–20 minutes or air fry at 375°F for 10–12 minutes, until the rolls are puffed, golden-brown, and the cheese is melted inside.
  6. Serve: Allow the pizza rolls to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm with dipping sauces such as marinara, garlic butter, or ranch for extra flavor.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, omit the pepperoni and include more sautéed vegetables.
  • Ensure the dough squares are sealed tightly to avoid filling leakage during cooking.
  • You can prepare the rolls ahead of time and freeze them before baking for a convenient snack later.
  • Adjust baking or air frying time based on your oven or air fryer model for best results.
  • Use freshly grated mozzarella cheese for better melting and flavor.
