This Deliciously Easy Apple Buttercream Icing is a perfect sweet and spiced topping for cakes, cupcakes, and other baked treats. Combining smooth buttercream with rich apple butter and a hint of cinnamon, it adds a warm, autumnal flavor that is simple to prepare and sure to impress.

Ingredients

For the Icing

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • ½ cup apple butter
  • 2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream (for adjusting thickness)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • a pinch of salt (to balance sweetness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Butter: Ensure the unsalted butter is softened to room temperature to achieve a creamy texture for the icing.
  2. Mix Butter and Apple Butter: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth, then add the apple butter and continue mixing until fully combined.
  3. Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar to the mixture, mixing continuously on low speed to prevent powder from flying and to combine evenly.
  4. Add Flavorings: Add vanilla extract, ground cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness. Mix well to incorporate all flavors.
  5. Adjust Consistency: Add milk or heavy cream one tablespoon at a time until the desired spreading consistency is reached. Beat the icing on medium speed for an additional 2-3 minutes for a light and fluffy texture.
  6. Use or Store: Use the apple buttercream immediately to frost your cakes or cupcakes, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Bring back to room temperature and re-whip before use.

Notes

  • If you prefer a stronger apple flavor, increase the apple butter slightly but reduce powdered sugar to maintain balance.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with vegan butter and heavy cream with coconut milk.
  • Optional cinnamon adds a nice spice element, but can be omitted if you want a purer apple flavor.
  • Sifting powdered sugar is important to prevent clumps in the frosting.
